Windows does not start due to device driver load in CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Cause:
A device driver or setting is interfering with Windows startup.
Solution:
Press F8 IMMEDIATELY when starting Windows, and select 'Step-by-step confirmation'.
NOTE: The following task should be performed by an advanced Windows 95 user.
1) Reboot the computer.
2) As soon as the 'Starting Windows' message appears, IMMEDIATELY press F8. (The text-mode 'Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu' appears.)
3) Select 'Step-by-step confirmation' from the Windows Startup menu, and press ENTER.
4) Press ENTER (Yes) or ESC (No) at each of the following prompts:
a) Load DoubleSpace (or DriveSpace) driver
b) Process the system Registry
c) Create a startup log file (Bootlog.txt)
d) Process the startup device drivers (Config.sys)
NOTE: If ENTER is pressed for option 4)d), then you will be prompted to process each line from Config.sys. Press ENTER (Yes) or ESC (No) to load the displayed line from Config.sys.
e) Process the startup command file (Autoexec.bat)
NOTE: If ENTER is pressed in step 4)e), then you will be prompted to process each line from Autoexec.bat after the line is displayed.
f) Win.com
NOTE 1: If ENTER is pressed in step 4)f), then a dialog box to 'Load all Windows drivers' appears.
NOTE 2: Answering 'Yes' at each prompt and pressing TAB to accept options will produce the same results as starting Windows normally.
NOTE 3: Answering 'No' to 'Load all Windows drivers' will load Windows in safe mode; the Registry will not be referenced, and standard VGA, mouse, keyboard, and device manager drivers will be loaded. When the computer starts in safe mode, you will not be able to access any devices which are not essential to the operating system, such as the CD-ROM, sound card, or modem.
